The Reality
Stone (or
Aether) is presumably still with the Collector after the Asgardians sent it to him at the end of Malekith's failed assault in Thor: The Dark World.
However, this theory does fall apart when you consider the fact that the
Aether, which holds the Reality
stone, was sent to the Collector because it was decided it was too dangerous to keep two Infinity Stones at Asgard, which already holds the Space
stone.
Suffice to say that the alien orb is one of the half - dozen «infinity
stones» with which the unfolding Marvel - verse is increasingly concerned (the Tesseract and the
Aether are the two others introduced to date) and pretty much everyone in the film is trying so hard to get his or her hands on it that it might as well be the Maltese Falcon or Ark of the Covenant.

Stone was originally a weapon used thousands of years ago in the realm of Svartalfheim, but the Asgardian Bor (grandfather of Thor) stopped its usage and hid it away in a faraway realm.
