As part of this campaign, IDA has begun accrediting universities that prepare their graduates to teach reading in accordance with
the Structured Literacy approach.
This strategically designed program, which meets twice a week for an hour and a half, offers children in preschool and kindergarten
a structured literacy approach to help improve alphabet knowledge, pre-reading skills and phonemic awareness; and are taught by teachers trained in Orton - Gillingham methodology.

Personally I am not a fan of these types of
structured programs because 1) there is not adequate research to support their efficacy and 2) they
approach literacy development in a highly contrived manner.
Because
Structured Literacy was originally devised to support students who struggle with reading, many educators assume that the
approach is only for remedial instruction.
Structured Literacy is a term coined in 2016 by the International Dyslexia Association to unify the many names for this research - based
approach.

IDA has defined evidence - based reading through our Knowledge and Practice Standards and given our
approach a name, «
Structured Literacy,» an explicit, systematic, multisensory
approach that focuses on giving students the ability to decode the words they encounter when learning to read.
