studies performed as well on multiple - choice
tests as students who received a traditional model of instruction, and they showed a deeper understanding of
content (Gallagher & Stepien, 1996).
The teachers of the subjects with high - stakes
tests want as much time as possible to work with students on those skills while social
studies teachers want the same respect for their
content and the time to teach it well.
• An earlier
study in Illinois found that students exposed to more authentic intellectual work saw greater gains on the standardized
tests than those not exposed to this
content.
Differences in the
content of the

study can not assess this possibility.
Secondary students using PBL in American

Studies comparing learning outcomes for students taught via project - based learning versus traditional instruction show that when implemented well, PBL increases long - term retention of
content, helps students perform as well as or better than traditional learners in high - stakes
tests, improves problem - solving and collaboration skills, and improves students» attitudes towards learning (Strobel & van Barneveld, 2009; Walker & Leary, 2009).
