For this
study, researchers from Dartmouth and Boise State University spent two months on snowmobiles to collect seven ice cores from the remote «percolation zone» of the West Greenland Ice
Sheet.
«The influence of distant forest fires on melt events on the Greenland ice
sheet is inherently challenging to demonstrate and these clear chemical results provide another line of evidence
for this connection,» said Diane McKnight, a CU Boulder professor and a co-author of the
study.
The computations were made consistent with well - accepted magnetostatic theory and resulted in spontaneous current
sheet development, making them relevant

Recent modelling by researchers from the Potsdam Institute

The scientists stressed the need
for more
study of the conditions at the bottom of the ice

sheet as a dumping ground
for radioactive waste.

study's results suggest the ice
sheet hasn't lost as much reflectivity as previously thought, and that black carbon and dust concentrations haven't increased significantly and are thus not responsible
for darkening on the upper ice
sheet.

for retreating ice
sheets in West Antarctica and Greenland, although her team could not determine how much methane actually escaped into the atmosphere from blowouts in the distant past.

«Based on the likely location of ice deposits during this period of Mars» history, and the amount of meltwater that could have been produced by Lyot ejecta landing on an ice
sheet, we think this is the most plausible scenario
for the formation of these valleys» said David Weiss, a recent Ph.D. graduate from Brown and the

One 2004 NASA - led
study found that most of the glaciers they were
studying «flow into floating ice shelves over bedrock up to hundreds of meters deeper than previous estimates, providing exit routes
for ice from further inland if ice -
sheet collapse is under way.»

study authors write, the rift is providing a channel
for warm ocean water to creep toward the interior of the West Antarctic Ice
Sheet, gnawing away at the Ferrigno Glacier from below.
«These glaciers will keep retreating
for decades and even centuries to come and we can't stop it,» said lead
study author Eric Rignot, a glaciologist at the University of California, Irvine, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. «A large sector of the West Antarctic Ice
Sheet has passed the point of no return.»
The new
study, which allowed them to observe how the shape and growth rates of the graphene domains depend on the structure of the underlying metal surface, could help produce large
sheets of carbon with a well - defined structure and properties
