Charters serving primary students in urban areas, which are supposed to provide an
alternative to public
schools, get almost a third
of their students from private
schools, a
study by the Cato Institute found.
We interpret the findings as indicating that systematic
studies are needed that (a) investigate
alternative interventions with students prior to middle
school and that (b) examine the efficacy
of interventions that integrate practices associated with cognitive malleability (executive functioning and self - regulation) into the treatments.
Operators
of alternative charter
schools including online and independent
study programs are challenging a report released last week that called out non-classroom instruction as being among the lowest performers statewide.
The cost
of getting a high
school dropout back to
school and through to graduation is $ 13,000 a year, or roughly $ 33,000 total, said Jack Wuest
of the
Alternative Schools Network, one
of the
study's sponsors.
Finally, all the
studies I've read say
alternative licensure does nothing to improve overall student performance, (that appearance only being created by the grouping
of more interested and involved parents into «charter»
schools which promise better results.
Further, the
study must consider the facility conditions, adequacy
of the site, cost / savings, community considerations, and
alternatives to closing the
school.
In one elementary
school - based
study, parents indicated that much
of their discomfort with
alternative assessment was based on the fact that they were accustomed to standardized testing and letter grades on report cards (Diffily, 1994).

school parents were asked about their views regarding
alternative assessment, most parents admitted having difficulty expressing their opinions because
of lack
of general knowledge about assessment (Robinson, 1996).

alternative governing structures to bring about improved opportunities for students; and a case
study on Washington, D.C. illustrates how a well - developed city ecosystem can support a large charter market share.
In the second
study, the Associated Press says charter
schools are among the nation's most segregated — «an outcome at odds, critics say, with their goal
of offering a better
alternative to failing traditional public
schools.»
Some
studies in both Massachusetts and New York City have found that a «No Excuses» educational approach — characterized by mandated intensive tutoring, longer instruction times, frequent teacher feedback, strict disciplinary policies, and high expectations for students — is a common feature among charter
schools with the biggest positive effects (however, the most effective
of these
schools are located in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods, making it difficult to disentangle whether this is due to the No Excuses approach or sub-par public
school alternatives).
Therefore, to advance the shift from evidence to practice, the EdCan Network would like to leverage the 2017 Indigenous «Innovation that Sticks» Dropout Prevention Case
Study Research Program to help determine the long - term value
of investing in
alternative education programs, and explore the reasons why some
school districts may hesitate to expand the availability
of alternative programs despite their success.
The
study, by Dr. Andrew Sum
of Boston's Northeastern University, will be presented at a forum which will also feature panelists from CPS, the state legislature, and local
alternative school administrators.
