Indeed, Jay Belsky incorporated all of these risk factors into his process model of parenting, 11 and data from multiple studies
support links to
child well - being.12 In an experiment
on the effectiveness of a program for low - birth - weight infants, Lawrence Berger and Jeanne Brooks - Gunn examined the relative effect of both socioeconomic status and parenting
on child abuse and neglect (as measured by ratings of health providers who saw
children in the treatment and control groups six times over the first three years of life, not by review of administrative data) and found that both factors contributed significantly and uniquely to the likelihood that a family was perceived to engage in some form of
child maltreatment.13 The link between parenting
behaviors and
child maltreatment suggests that interventions that promote positive parenting
behaviors would also contribute to lower rates of
child maltreatment among families served.
Assessing Families for Permanency: Guidance From Research North Carolina Division of Social Services (2013) Provides information
on the assessment process for finding permanent placements for
children in foster care, including key assessment areas and questions to consider when determining whether potential permanent families have the necessary flexibility to maintain connections with birth families, coping skills and social
supports to meet the realities of parenting, and realistic expectations about the
behaviors and reactions that can overwhelm adoptive parents.
Research shows that high - quality father involvement and
support are associated with a number of positive

The research provides less
support for the effect of home visiting programs

It includes a series of public seminars that provide general tips
on everyday parenting issues; one - off discussion groups addressing the most common parenting problems; brief and short - term primary care consultations for specific problems; group or online courses for a comprehensive understanding of Triple P strategies; a one -
on - one personal
support program for tackling serious
behavior problems; and two high intensity programs that deal with complex family and / or mental health issues, including the risk of
child maltreatment.
These findings
support previous evidence suggesting that the
behaviors couples engage in that are destructive to their relationship also have an impact

We anticipated the sustained effects regarding favorable parenting practices because of the fidelity to the intervention that was demonstrated across the study sites22 and the theoretical underpinnings of the intervention, which intended to improve
child outcomes by focusing
on parent
behaviors that
support and nurture
child development.3
Parent education programs focus
on enhancing parenting practices and
behaviors, such as developing and practicing positive discipline techniques, learning age - appropriate

behaviors, and family cohesion) and individual, couple, and family well - being, with a particular emphasis
on complex families (e.g., stepfamilies and those parenting
children across multiple households).
Roughly 1 h of each session focused
on (1) understanding the role of parental reactivity («the low road», Siegel and Hartzell 2004) and its relatedness to stress and fatigue, own upbringing patterns, personal or relational difficulties (e.g., lack of perceived partner
support),
child mental health problems (e.g.,
behavior problems), and historically grown parent —
child interaction patterns, (2) taking care of yourself as a parent, (3) non-judgmental attention for the

children to have more autonomy so they can learn to make good decisions
on their own.»
