The first set of
Surface tablets did not have a great introduction.
Then again, both the Google Nexus 10 and
the Surface tablets do not have the same popularity as the iPad.
The big question: What will Microsoft's entry with
the Surface tablet do to the development of apps for competing platforms?
Not exact matches
Although the
Surface 2 is comparatively priced to similar 10 - inch rival
tablets, it's significantly underpowered in terms of what it can
do thanks to a lack of apps.
But with the way - overpriced $ 1,000
Surface Pro announced for January, the future doesn't look any brighter in
tablets.
As Microsoft's
tablet efforts will soon resurface in a next - generation device, Redmond should pay heed to what worked and what didn't in
Surface's initial incarnation.

Surface Pro, but it's still a great device for getting stuff

The
Surface tablet comes in a dark titanium matte black - style shade and has a far more industrial look and feel, but
does look built to last and able to withstand more than a few knocks.
I think the Apple Pencil provides a better experience than the Microsoft Stylus
does with the
Surface range of
tablets.
When it comes down to it, the
Surface is reliant on 3rd party apps to get the job
done, and this
tablet was not designed just to view or edit documents.
Microsoft revamped the
Surface Pen,
doing away with that awkward fabric loop that clipped previous pens on to the
tablet.
Along with underscoring the business functionality Microsoft was aiming for with their
Surface line, the pen allows users to engage with their device in a unique way that other
tablets don't quite have a bead on yet.
The first thing to notice with the
tablet though is its external
surface and Acer has
done a splendid job with the
tablet that looks well built and exudes a feeling of solidity.
I like that they
did not copy the
Surface design, it looks much more like a natural evolution of the Samsung
tablet.
Like the
Surface Pro, Microsoft
does not plan to bundle the keyboard cover with the low - cost
tablet.
The Microsoft
Surface RT
Tablet and many other PC variants gives you an entirely new interface with a new way of
doing apps.
It also helps when the
Surface is being marketed as having the full capabilities of a laptop (including a full USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort, and a MicroSD card reader)-- making it a very attractive option for those of us with children who need these kinds of devices for school work while
doing double duty as a much - sought - after
tablet as well.

We don't have specs, but the VAIO Duo 11's backlit keyboard collapses on a sliding hinge into what appears to be a relatively thin traditional
tablet; that's a different tack than Microsoft is taking with the
Surface, which is available with a couple of optional (and innovative) keyboard attachments.
Unlike many other blue - chip Windows OEMs, Lenovo has been
doing very well recently — and the
Tablet 2 will likely be expected to
do heated battle with Microsoft's own
Surface in the waning months of the year.

Surface Pro
tablets do a better job but they're expensive.

I
do agree that the
Surface 3 is unique and that nothing directly compares to it but if you're looking at the entry - level model of the
Surface 3 and are not interested in the digitizer then the Yoga
Tablet 2 is the better value product.
With Apple not wholly embracing the idea of
tablets as laptop replacements like Microsoft has
done with the Microsoft
Surface and like Asus has
done with the Asus Transformer, the larger iPad still feels to us like a product that's trying to fit a gap that simply isn't there.
It
does add $ 130 to the
tablet's price, but it gives the
Surface Pro 4 the full functionality of a laptop.
As you can see, these are more laptop prices than
tablet ones, and the
Surface Pro 3 goes up against the MacBook Air and the new MacBook Pro than it
does the iPad, although it functions like a
tablet too.
In testing, I didn't find my arm tiring especially quickly, and the included
Surface Pen goes a long way in making the
tablet more viable to use while holding in one hand.
While the price of the
tablet and Type Cover together is $ 300 more than the list price of the 13 - inch Apple MacBook Air, the
Surface Pro 4
does give you
tablet functionality and a touch screen with a higher resolution.
We're not sure if there is support for Adobe's Photoshop and we wouldn't bet on that since most Windows 8
tablets including the
surface do not fully support Photoshop yet (with pressure sensitiveness etc).
So what
does this mean for owners of older non-Pro
Surface tablets?
The
Surface Pro 4 features stereo Dolby speakers, which don't have visible grilles and instead produce sound from the interior of the
tablet and through the ventilation.
Conclusion The Microsoft
Surface 3
does several things quite well, packaging the features of the
Surface Pro 3 into a smaller, more affordable
tablet.
The Sony Xperia
Tablet Z doesn't feel cheap, but neither has it the premium, slick feel of an iPad or even the Microsoft
Surface Pro.
With
Surface sales sluggish so far, and Microsoft failing to clearly state how many copies of the Windows 8 it's sold to date, we just don't know yet if Windows
tablets can match the success we've already seen on Android and iOS.
It doesn't compete with the performance on the
Surface 3 though and if more Intel Atom X7 devices appear then the Lenovo Yoga
Tablet 2 is going to fall behind.
Microsoft's latest
Surface tablet won't be easy to repair.The adventurous bunch at iFixit found the
Surface 2 pretty much impossible to delve into if a user doesn't know what they're
doing.

Unanswered Questions In addition to price and a solid release date, we still don't know how much RAM the Microsoft
Surface tablets will have, nor
do we know the processor speeds.

does this cheaper price make the
Surface look like a better deal than the iPad, but also prices it aggressively against other Windows 8
tablets.
It's just that the
Surface 2 is lost in between laptop and
tablet,
