of new Ph.D. graduates who come from families where neither parent has earned more than a high school degree has fallen from about 31 % in 1992 to just under 20 % in 2012, while the proportion
of graduates from families with at least one parent with an advanced degree has climbed; it was about 33 % in 1992, and it is now above 40 %.
According to the 2002 North American
survey, approximately 60 %
of professionals hold at least a master's degree and nearly 20 % have a
doctorate degree.
