Furthermore, it's possible that the
film might struggle to be seen as more than a performance showcase — Jones and Fiennes might well be in the running, depending on the strength
of the categories, but it'll really need strong
reviews out
of TIFF to be a Best Picture contender.

Some articles about the
film and its circuitous route towards wide release (after receiving generally positive
reviews at the 06
TIFF, it fell into distribution hell for nearly 7 years) would have you believe that it's a sleeper indie with a sharp style, a biting wit, and surprisingly meta - ending reminiscent
of Joss Whedon's much - delayed 2012 flick, Cabin in the Woods.
The
film, about the titular champion ice skater who later embroiled herself in a plot to break the leg
of her competitor, Nancy Kerrigan, world - premiered at
TIFF earlier this month to enthusiastic
reviews from movie critics, with particular praise — and Oscar buzz — brewing for Robbie and Allison Janney, who plays Harding's mother, LaVonda Golden.

Reviews have been quick to note that this movie might end up being too weird and dark for AMPAS, but the
film was still one
of the bigger critical breakouts
of TIFF this year, and it'll likely be one
of the more acclaimed wide releases opening this month.

The festival
reviews have been mixed (here's Kurt's rather apathetic
TIFF review), but now that the trailer for the
film has dropped, those
of us who didn't get a chance to see it during its festival run can get our first real glimpse
of some footage.

TIFF but I have confidence that what may turned many off about Dom Hemingway will work wonders for me.

The
film, a New York - set relationship drama, was conceived, shot and screened at
TIFF as a two - part, three - hour epic, subtitled «Him» and «Her,» telling the same story from two different points
of view (read our
review).
