The past five years have brought a sea change in
urban climate action: increased awareness of the critical role that local leaders play in carbon reduction; new capacity in local governments to
tackle climate change; and a sharper focus on strategies that advance energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean transportation.
It would be far better to spend some of the trillions being spent on the
climate crusade to ensure that our infrastructure can cope with whatever weather extremes do occur; or
tackling some real world problems such as terrorism, displaced people, water supply,
urban air and water pollution, garbage and landfill.
The Executive Director outlines how to
tackle climate change issues within a broader framework of sustainable housing and
urban development.
One of the study's author's, Dabo Guan, professor of
climate change economics at the University of East Anglia's School of International Development, UK, says the growth in the carbon footprint of the
urban middle class and the rich in China is a big problem that has to be
tackled.
