Team teachers report positive experiences from the support they receive from their multi-classroom leaders — support that should be extended to all aspiring teachers in the U.S. Opportunity Culture schools with principals who lead strong, schoolwide teams of multi-classroom leaders in core subjects have shown the largest, fastest gains schoolwide in the first years of the Opportunity Culture initiative.

report positive changes that address social emotional learning.

teacher leader participation on instructional

These studies
reported on a range of factors that influenced the functioning of

teacher leaders, including: focus on subject matter, group dynamics, and the training received by the

In my readings of a few of the
reports, I found evidence that effective principals establish leadership
teams, led by the principal, assistant principals, and
teacher leaders.
In some settings district leaders
reported a shift: initially, an emphasis on developing principals «expertise in data use; next, an emphasis on training selected
teachers in each school as resident experts; and, more recently, an emphasis on encouraging and supporting data use by classroom
teachers, working in
teams.
Although the
teachers reported serious concerns about the pace of their work, they said that their
teams reduced stress rather than intensified it.
Brinn and LePage
report that academy participants have used what they learned to have difficult conversations with other adults, approach problems with students as technical or adaptive, create a strong and sustainable
team culture as
teacher - leaders, and use collaborative problem - solving with students and other adults.
Little (1995)
reported that
teacher leaders who led
teams of
teachers organized around subject areas derived their authority from their subject area affiliations and were better positioned to provide instructional support than
teacher leaders who led interdisciplinary
teams.
Teachers in outstanding high - poverty schools
report that working in collaborative
teams can produce significant rewards.
In a study by Coggins et al. (2003) coaches (i.e.,
teacher leaders)
reported that they were most effective supporting their schools» reform efforts when facilitating
teams of
teachers in meetings that were focused on instruction (such as analysis of student achievement data and discussions of research).
