[103] She replied that the Government is committed to making «appropriate payments», and described how the Government had asked the Northern
Territory Valuer - General to determine reasonable amounts of rent as set out in the NTNER Act.
In October 2008, well after proceedings in this case had commenced, the Government requested the Northern
Territory Valuer - General to determine the rents that should be paid for the compulsory five - year leases.
The federal minister may, however, from time to time, request the
Valuer - General to determine a reasonable amount of rent to be paid by the federal government to the relevant owner (not the Northern
Territory) of the land covered by the five - year lease.57 If such a request is made the
Valuer - General must comply and the federal government must pay the amount determined.58
