In tandem with a new website that offers important educational resources, including thinking routines to stimulate learning, the paper solidifies Agency by
Design's efforts to shape a set of research - based, educator -
tested practices and to invite the broad community of
maker educators into a conversation about the ideas driving and shaping the movement.
Our initial goals were to develop an understanding of the Agency by
Design research findings, and to utilize the AbD framework for
maker - centered learning to collaboratively think about prototyping and
testing assessment tools in the context of
maker - centered learning.
It is our hope that by collaborating with this diverse group of educators working in a variety of teaching and learning environments, we may be able to develop,
test, remix, retest, and refine a suite of contemporary assessment strategies
designed to document, enrich, and support
maker empowerment across all learning environments.
There is no justification for such choices in
test design unless the
test makers want to push the cut scores for meeting and exceeding expectations well above what the median student is even capable of developmentally.

What part of the high rate of failure, however, was due to inadequate student knowledge in mathematics and what part of the failure was due to the poor quality of the questions asked and the convoluted and confusing

designed by the
test makers.
Following its initial investigation of the promises, practices, and pedagogies of
maker - centered learning, the AbD research team is now collaborating with a cohort of teacher - researchers in Oakland, California to
test and develop documentation and assessment strategies for
design and
maker - centered learning.
Using any standardized achievement
test for a purpose for which it was not
designed violates nationally - accepted standards of the
