Tight piriformis by itself can cause the pain in the butt, but the situation becomes worse if it presses on the sciatic nerve that passes underneath (and for some people right through) the piriformis muscle.

tight piriformis is the lack of hip internal rotation, often caused
by lack of core strength, decreased iliacus firing and decreased arch strength.
While this can be caused
by tight muscles, it can also occur
