However, the implications of this benefit won't be tested until later this year (when more Android phones are launched with

Treble support, which was achieved by using the unused cust partition.
Also, now that these devices have been updated to Android Oreo with Project
Treble support, owners of the Honor 8 Pro and the Honor 9 can now install a generic AOSP ROM if they'd like.
The same method was used to bring unofficial Project
Treble support to the Xiaomi Mi 5s (codename: capricorn) and the Xiaomi Mi 5 (codename: gemini).
But Asus didn't let that stop it from releasing an Android Oreo - based update for the Asus Zenfone 4 that brings Project

Phones launched with Android Oreo are required to be compatible, but it's optional for OEMs to include

However, devices that shipped with older versions of Android are not required to be updated with Project

Huawei is one company that has opted to update older devices with

We are so close to getting new phones with Oreo (more importantly, Project
Treble support) that pulling the trigger on Tenor might not make sense.
