While not the ideal way to do it, you're getting the pressure off the back of the head, which is the main
goal with
tummy time.
A marathon runner has to build endurance in order to do longer runs, and babies aren't really all that different,
tummy time is their marathon and every day they get a little strong and reach a little further, building those basic skills so that they can achieve their ultimate
goal, which is keeping up with mom and dad, and even surpassing them!
That baby wants to do so many things that it can't do quite yet, but the more opportunities you give your baby to do
tummy time, the sooner they will be able to reach those
goals that you know they are obsessing about!
Speaking of building endurance and strength, the
goal of
tummy time is to eventually get babies up and moving, and trust me, there is nothing that baby wants more than to get up and go!
The lights and music encourage baby to crawl... one of the big
goals of
tummy time.
Here are a few fun ways to play that can achieve similar
goals to
Tummy Time without asking a baby to stay in one spot.
Increase the length of «
tummy time» as your baby gets older with a
goal of around 60 minutes per day by age of 3 months.
A couple of Occupational Therapists completed and published a research study that compared two groups of babies, one group spent 30 minutes minimum of
tummy time per day and the other group did not, the
tummy time group scored higher on developmental assessments, so perhaps 30 minutes in a good
goal per day; most helpful if broken up into mini sessions throughout the day.
