Remember that
award itineraries wholly within North America that include flights operated by
United Airlines can't have a stopover.
While many airlines have made it more difficult to score a stopover on
award tickets, there are still some options out there such as
United's Excursionist perk that can include legal stopovers on some
itineraries.
When you get an agent on the phone, explain that you are trying to book an
itinerary that you believe is within
United's
award rules and that you could not book it online and received an error.
Though
United's website allows an extremely seamless level of partner bookings compared to many other airline
award booking websites, it often runs into trouble processing complex
itineraries with stopovers.
If you haven't already, walk through your
itinerary one leg at a time on the
United award search tool to make sure there is space on the flights and cabins you need before calling to book your
award.
Today,
United restricted members» ability to book multi-city trips, only allowing flight combinations that
United creates for the trip and blocking the ability to manually build
award itineraries.
They sure used an awful lot of language in an attempt to put a positive spin on these changes, but the bottom line is that we are now dependent on
United's
award booking engine, which doesn't pull in all partner flights, excludes many routings, and has a difficult time with
itineraries of three or more legs.
One major advantage of flying
United Airlines is that it allows one - way
awards, giving travelers more flexibility when planning their
itinerary.
Virgin Atlantic collects just # 15 (domestic
itineraries) or # 30 (international
itineraries) to change or cancel
award travel that originates in the
United Kingdom.
Like
United, it also does a great job of searching for almost all Star Alliance members, but it does a slightly better job of searching for
awards with connections so you shouldn't need to search segment - by - segment unless your intended
itinerary has more than three segments.
If fact, Singapore's
award chart trumps
United's own
award chart on nearly every
itinerary in North America, especially with no close - in booking fees, a low $ 30 SGD fee to cancel and an even lower $ 12 SGD fee to change a ticket (Singaporean dollars are each worth ~ 70 US cents).
Apparently, devaluing stopovers wasn't enough, and
United has now decided that if you wish to actually pay the prices they publish on their
award chart, you can only select from the flight options they display for you — no longer are you able to piece together your own
itinerary using multi-city search without paying extra.

awards are hard to come by, here's how to piece together your

You'll also pay a $ 75 fee for ticket changes before 21 days of departure, so
United award bookings are best made in advance when you're sure of your
itinerary.
United had relatively friendly
award routing rules that allowed one stopover and two open jaws on roundtrip
award tickets.Those rules are gone now though and have been replaced by the «Excursionist Perk,» which is essentially a free segment on an international
itinerary.

award types and classes of service to create a round - trip travel
