Not many people know that there is an alternative to Gmail checker called
Unread message icon hidden away in the Gmail > Settings > Labs tab.

Putting those permanent
icons in the space usually occupied by transient notifications creates a dissonance: every time I glance at that corner, I keep thinking I have
unread messages.
iOS has had notification badges for a very long time now: it's those small numbers above your app
icons — whether it's on your home screen on in your app drawer — that indicate how many
unread emails or text
messages you have among others.
The flat
icons like mail, phone,
messages, and email lack the useful feature of showing how many calls or
messages you missed, or
unread emails.
These replace the standard notification badges that show up on the right side of each app
icon and provide you with the number of missed calls,
unread messages on different apps, and more.
