To date, results from several longitudinal studies indicate that e-cigarette
use among nonsmoking youth increases the likelihood of future
use of conventional cigarettes.5 — 10 Specifically, the pooled odds ratio (OR) in a recent meta - analysis of studies of adolescents and young adults (aged 14 — 30) indicates that those who had ever
used e-cigarettes were 3.62 times more likely to report
using cigarettes at follow - up compared with those who had not
used e - cigarettes.11 This finding was robust and remained significant when adjusting for known
risk factors associated with cigarette smoking, including demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral variables such
as cigarette susceptibility.

In fact, if one considered just three
factors (maternal education, maternal prenatal alcohol or tobacco, and marital status) one could predict to a high degree postneonatal mortality: children born to unmarried women with lower education and evidence of prenatal drug
use had a postneonatal mortality of about 30 per 1000 live births (similar to Ivory Coast); children born to women with none of these
risk factors had a postneonatal mortality of about 2 per 1000 live births (similar to Norway); that is, children in this latter category almost never die despite evidence from PRAMS surveys that they are
as likely to co-sleep with their parents.
We considered the cost of hypertension alone plus the cost of hypertension

The
risk of SIDS while bed sharing went down
as the infant grew older, but other
factors including if the parents were smokers or if the mother drank two or more units of alcohol within 24 hours or
used illegal drugs, increased the
risk.
Rebreathing exhaled carbon dioxide trapped near an infant's airway by bedding has been suggested
as a possible mechanism for the occurrence of SIDS in at -
risk infants and may occur with the
use of soft bedding, covering the head during sleep, and
use of the prone sleep position.9 - 12 Inadequate ventilation might facilitate pooling of carbon dioxide around a sleeping infant's mouth and nose and might increase the likelihood of rebreathing.13, 14 Increased movement of air in the room of a sleeping infant may potentially decrease the accumulation of carbon dioxide around the infant's nose and mouth and reduce the
risk of rebreathing.10 A recent study15 showing a significantly reduced
risk of SIDS associated with pacifier
use further supports the importance of rebreathing
as a
risk factor for SIDS.
In addition, maternal mortality reviews in several states have identified substance
use as a major
risk factor for pregnancy - associated deaths (9, 10).
Subsequently, by virtue of defining that an adult and infant are unable to safely sleep on the same surface together, such
as what occurs during bedsharing, even when all known adverse bedsharing
risk factors are absent and safe bedsharing practices involving breastfeeding mothers are followed, an infant that dies while sharing a sleeping surface with his / her mother is labeled a SUID, and not SIDS.26 In this way the infant death statistics increasingly supplement the idea that bedsharing is inherently and always hazardous and lend credence, artificially, to the belief that under no circumstance can a mother, breastfeeding or not, safely care for, or protect her infant if asleep together in a bed.27 The legitimacy of such a sweeping inference is highly problematic, we argue, in light of the fact that when careful and complete examination of death scenes, the results revealed that 99 % of bedsharing deaths could be explained by the presence of at least one and usually multiple independent
risk factors for SIDS such
as maternal smoking, prone infant sleep,
use of alcohol and / or drugs by the bedsharing adults.28 Moreover, this new ideology is especially troubling because it leads to condemnations of bedsharing parents that border on charges of being neglectful and / or abusive.
We defined OL
as delayed if it occurred after 72 h and
used chi - square analysis to examine its association with potential

factors, and 6) infant feeding variables.
All parents should be provided with information regarding a)
factors known to increase the
risk of SIDS in the bed - sharing environment, including parental smoking (particularly maternal smoking in pregnancy), young maternal age, infant prematurity; and b) aspects of adult beds that should be modified with infant safety in mind: e.g. gaps between bed and wall or other furniture, proximity of baby to pillows, type of bedding
used, parental behaviour prior to bed - sharing such
as consumption of alcohol, drugs or medication affecting arousal.

factors that also contribute to a
risk of preterm birth, the researchers
used a case - control design: 2,265 women with a sleep disorder diagnosis during pregnancy were matched to controls who did not have such a diagnosis, but had identical maternal
risk factors for preterm birth, such
as a previous preterm birth, smoking during pregnancy, or hypertension.
They add: «The greatest reduction in

The method
used in the study is known
as the Hirsch Index and while the study authors acknowledge
factors such

used to produce a shortlist of pathogens for authorities to focus on.
