With rates at historic lows, many investors have
used high -
dividend stocks, rather than low -
yielding bonds, in pursuit of income.
Like many of the screens, strategies, and portfolios I track and prefer, the
High Yield Dividend Champion Portfolio
uses a small number of historically relevant ideas to create a simple, yet powerful investment plan.
For those new to the site, I track a
high yield / low payout portfolio
using Dividend Champion stocks (stocks with a history of raising
dividends 25 + years).
It
uses high yield investments as part of a
Dividend Blend.

For example, a company's

use a company's share price to calculate
yield).

highest -
yielding exchange - listed stocks that passed the
High Relative
Dividend Yield screen
using data as of August 6, 2010.
You can also
use this technique to find sectors and
dividend growth stocks that have sold off and have relatively
high yields.
Since I'm building passive income for early retirement as opposed to planning to
use the 4 % rule, I aim for
higher yields and
dividend growth instead of total return for this portion of my assets.
An easy way to attempt to find value stocks is to
use the «Dogs of the Dow» investing strategy by purchasing the 10
highest dividend -
yielding stocks on the Dow Jones at the beginning of each year and adjusting the portfolio every year thereafter.
But with access to mortgage REIT American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC), midstream energy specialist Linn Energy (NASDAQOTH: LINEQ), and other
high -
yielding dividend stocks, you can
use a Coverdell to get similar tax benefits that 529 plans offer while boosting your portfolio income.
Dividend investors tend to look for
high yielding stocks and often
use an index as a way to determine what is actually
high and what is low.

Before you decide on one, try
using a stock screener to find out which company has the
highest dividend yield.
We have
high yield dividend equities — this is unique to Rebalance IRA — that we
use a proxy for a bond fund because interest rates are artificially manipulated by the government and kept artificially lower than they normally would have been if the market had set those rates by its own market forces.

Using Stockscreen123 I started with the entire universe of stocks excluding over-the-counter, I ran the following screen to generate a list of 12 potential
high yield,
dividend growth stocks.
Many investors who want
yield without (too much) risk have successfully found it
using high dividend blue chip stocks.
I
used data provided by DRIP Investing to filter for stocks with
high yields and
high dividend growth rates.
I wrote a recent article for Seeking Alpha which
used Stockscreen123 to screen for 12
high yield,
dividend growth stocks.
The income investing strategy is about more than
using a stock screener to find the companies with the
highest dividend yield.
You can start by
using a stock screener to find companies paying the
highest dividend yields, and then analyze them
using fundamental analysis — and your own interpretation of the numbers.
So people who maybe in the past
used to own corporate bonds now own
dividend stocks, indiscriminately, because the
yields there are
higher than some corporate bonds.
I suppose I could go further back in history and
use Schiller's dataset, but the era of
high dividend yields on stocks is over, at least for now.
Four of the top 10 lowest volatility
Dividend Champion stocks are also holdings in the
High Yield Dividend Champion Portfolio I track monthly and which
uses a completely different method for selecting
Dividend Champion stocks.
I like to add to my equity holdings over time
using a dollar cost averaging strategy, so rather than stop investing I added to my position each month in the Vanguard
High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM).
Already we see investors
using the Vanguard
High Dividend Yield Index and iShares US Minimum Volatility Index as the benchmark for their respective factors and I feel that is effective.
For example, a
dividend paying stock's
yield could be
high simply because its share price has dropped sharply (because you
use a company's share price to calculate
yield) in anticipation of a
dividend cut.
It's not that hard to create some impressive
dividend growth
using boring
high yield stocks like Rogers Sugar (TSX: RSI) and Extendicare (TSX: EXE).
Notice that I
used the most conservative estimate (6.9 %) of future
dividend yields from
high quality,
high dividend companies.
But I believe a fair proxy for reviewing the payout ratio is to
use the regular
dividend and EPS for 2010, which works out to be a payout ratio of under 60 %, which is reasonable for such a
high yield.
Most of the increase was a result of selling one of the portfolio's larger stock positions, Metlife (MET), and
using the proceeds to buy three stocks with
higher dividend yields.
Starting with this basic premise, I
used stockscreen123 to generate a list of
high yield,
dividend growth stocks which meet additional fundamental factors.
This primary function of an investment portfolio (
using mutual fund
dividend and capital gains
yields to generate retirement paychecks) is not possible with American Funds, because they don't have the asset classes needed to obtain a
high stable income stream.

Using techniques identified in the article, a few income funds are highlighted (including the Buffalo
High Yield Fund) that pay regular
dividends and preserved investors» capital during the period before and through the Great Recession.
