A joint research group succeeded in observing the topological
phase transition in which a
material changes to the topological electronic
phase by
using soft X-rays, light suitable for determining the topology of
materials by their substances rather than by their appearance.
A common approach to thermal storage is to
use what is known as a
phase change material (PCM), where input heat melts the
material and its
phase change — from solid to liquid — stores energy.
Instead, the new system
uses molecular switches that
change shape in response to light; when integrated into the PCM, the
phase -
change temperature of the hybrid
material can be adjusted with light, allowing the thermal energy of the
phase change to be maintained even well below the melting point of the original
material.
This blue LED lamp setup is
used to trigger the heat discharge from large - scale films of
phase -
change materials.
Using a new technique, Van Heumen and McLeod are now able to visualise the
changes taking place in the
material during such a
phase transition on the nanometer scale.
Each compound, Sutterlin says, naturally melts or solidifies at a different specific temperature and can be
used as the base
material for an application, depending on the
phase change point needed.

phase -
change materials,» is published in Optica.
Using ultrafast 4 - D imaging, the new UEC technique allows researchers to «film» the atomic mechanism behind the recording process in memories based on
phase change materials.
Using ultrafast laser pulses that speed up the data recording process, Caltech researchers adopted a novel technique, ultrafast electron crystallography (UEC), to visualize directly in four dimensions the
changing atomic configurations of the
materials undergoing the
phase changes.
In the new work, IBM's Evangelos Eleftheriou and colleagues demonstrate a potentially simpler system that

used germanium antimony telluride (GST)-- the kind of
phase -
change material found in CDs and DVDs — to make an improved switchable metasurface that can block or transmit particular wavelengths of light at the command of light pulses.
Using a proprietary blend of encapsulated
phase change materials and combining it with new graphite infusion and ventilation provides an exceptionally comfortable and cool memory foam pillow through pillow science.
The
phase -
change materials can manipulate light - by electrical, optical or mechanical means - they can be
used to filter, steer or dim light
using very little power.

Sunamp appears to take this a step further, storing the excess energy in the same kind of
phase change material used in those hand warmers you can buy from camping stores.
With HUAWEI Space Cooling Technology, Microencapsulated
Phase Change Material — commonly
used in the aerospace field — has been applied to the HUAWEI MateBook X, making the device a fanless 13 - inch notebook with powerful 7th Generation Intel ® Core ™ i7 or i5 processors inside.
