and faculty that encourages support for
research that
uses animals;
and initiated a dialogue with peaceful animal rights advocates.
The workshop was grounded in a recognition that many
research ethics issues are relevant to the practice
and application of
science, from developing hypotheses
and designing a protocol, to data management
and analysis, to reporting findings
and advising others on the
uses of the work,
and that integrating ethics instruction in the context of performing those various stages of
research can be an effective strategy for educating future researchers.
The trend toward transformative
research is fueled by nations» efforts to
use science and technology to leapfrog competition in terms of innovation
and economic development in a globalized environment, says Robert Frodeman, a philosophy professor at the University of North Texas, Denton,
and director of the Center for the Study of Interdisciplinarity.
During an intensive, three - day workshop, Nadeau was able to sit down with teachers, as well as National Park representatives, filmmakers, writers
and other
science communicators to discuss how such communications platforms could be
used to spread understanding of his
research findings.
