The largest
savings come from the industrial
efficiency package, followed by ZNE new homes and buildings,
vehicle fuel economy improvements, appliance and equipment
efficiency, and home and commercial building retrofits.
The Lugar - Graham plan achieves
savings in electricity and oil use by requiring higher mileage for
vehicles, greater
efficiency in power generation, increased use of alternative
fuels and new standards for energy use in buildings.
In the meantime, as the NY Times points out, it may make sense to consider individual actions, such as more energy efficient appliances and increased
vehicle efficiency, if the data shows net
savings as a result of energy independence, reduced expenditures for fossil
fuel due to reduced energy uses and potential reduction in defense expenditures as a result of reduced dependence on the middle east for oil.
