Parents often have little or no oversight over their children's a la carte purchases and, indeed, many are shocked when
they visit a school cafeteria and see the foods being made available to their children.
When
I visit school cafeterias there are two questions I repeatedly ask.
If you're not convinced that hunger is a real problem for your students,
visit a school cafeteria on the morning after a long weekend, suggests Lynn Harvey, president of the School Nutrition Association.

In my experience
visiting many
school cafeterias, I have learned that a parent's # 1 priority at lunchtime is nutrition.
But the Northbrook
School District 28 administrative assistant, who had never
visited the lunchroom, let alone dined there, now buys her meals each day in the
cafeteria, where the menus got a healthful upgrade three years ago.
In the Greeley and Gresham
schools and others we
visited and in most of the elementary
school lunchrooms throughout the city, children pick up their trays and file along a short
cafeteria line that offers a serving of meat or an alternative, a vegetable, bread, fruit and milk.
Why is it important to

The book launch coincides with National
School Lunch Week and National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day, when parents are encouraged to
visit their children's
cafeteria, snap a photo of their lunch, and upload it online.

As a feeding therapist who works with children who have difficulty eating in various environments, I often
visit kids in their
school cafeterias — otherwise known as the
school CAFÉ - FEARIA, according to one 7 year old client of mine.
We have also helped
schools add educational activities to the day, from hanging posters in the
cafeteria and inviting a farmer to lunch to
visiting a farm, farmers market or
school garden.
Principals, coaches and even Clifford the Big Red Dog paid a
visit to the
cafeteria to help serve students their healthy and delicious

But while government agencies usually focus their limited resources on unsanitary practices in the factories that produce food, inspection reports and site
