Between 1986 and 1991 there were numerous exhibitions, conferences, and artworks about AIDS in New York, while activist groups such as ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and
Visual AIDS worked to educate the public and insist on medical research and treatment.
To honor its twenty - fifth year,
Visual AIDS worked with filmmaker Tom Kalin to commission seven artists and collaboratives — Rhys Ernst, Glen Fogel, Lyle Ashton Harris, Derek Jackson, Tom Kalin, My Barbarian, and Julie Tolentino — to create new, short videos to be screened internationally on / around December 1, 2014.

In looking through The Archive Project at
Visual AIDS, we were seduced by
works that blurred the line between the decorative, functional, craft, and the so - called fine arts.
It is in this sentiment, as well as possibly for the first time telling Ross» side of the story, that the recently acquired archive of material at
Visual AIDS is generative for Felix Gonzalez - Torres» body of
work, rounding out a biography that is inextricable from the art.
Since then
Visual AIDS has remained committed to
working with galleries, museums and art spaces to feature art from the Archive.
On December 1st, 1994 members of The Archive Project and
Visual AIDS stood on the steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art demanding direct services to artists living with HIV, and offering a direct resource for archiving artists»
work.
It's a great way to both get a wonderful piece of original art and support the important
work of
Visual AIDS.
Inspired by protest - art groups like ACT UP spinoff Gran Fury — which produces «campaigns» like «Kissing Doesn't Kill: Greed and Indifference Do,» «Art is Not Enough» and, most famously, «Silence = Death,» a neon sign which hangs in the window of the New Museum — the activist group
Visual AIDS persuades hundreds of art organizations to institute a «day without art,» and shroud
work in «mourning and action in response to the
AIDS crisis.»
This bold
work with its deep red calligraphic marks
aided by a confident approach shows one side of Jinchi's studies of the
visual and text and its content.
An activist for many years, he has
worked with a wide variety of both arts and
AIDS organizations including the Whitman - Walker Clinic, Artists Board of Artists Space, Co-Chair of the 21st Century Committee for the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture 1999 - 2005, Board of Directors for
Visual AIDS 1995 - 1998 and 2010 to 2018 and Board of Directors of Cannabis Cares from 1999 to present.
Currently she
works as an interviewer on the Smithsonian
Visual Art and the
AIDS epidemic oral history project and co-curates the reading and performance series Adult Contemporary, which released its first book of art and literature last fall.
I had the surprising misfortune of learning about Chuck Nanney's HIV status while discovering his
work in the
Visual AIDS archives for this project.
With that idea in mind, this selection of
works for
Visual AIDS, featuring
work by Chuck Nanney and the late Felix Gonzalez - Torres, is completely devoid of any imagery that could easily be identified as queer.
In 1999,
Visual AIDS launches a monthly web gallery, featuring
work from
Visual AIDS artists members, and selected by guest curators, drawn from both the arts and
AIDS communities.

Visual AIDS, in partnership with the estate of Robert Blanchon, began archiving the
work that comprises the Robert Blanchon.

work that might otherwise be lost.

visual works depicting hope and resilience from a devastating disease can be seen in «Art
AIDS America Chicago,» an exhibition that opened at the Alphawood Gallery on World
AIDS Day and runs through April 2, 2017.
