vote share one point
below the consensus of all three other
polling organisations.
However,
in the 1983 general election, when Labour received its lowest
vote share (27.6 %) since 1918, the SDP fared much less well: the party took 11.6 % of the
vote, slightly
below the 13.7 % its Alliance partners the Liberals
polled, and it ended up with only six seats.
In systems with a threshold, people who prefer a larger party may tactically
vote for a minor party that is predicted to
poll close to or slightly
below the threshold.
The Labour Party
polled below expectations and won 30.4 % of the
vote and 232 seats, 24 fewer than their previous result
in 2010, even though
in 222 constituencies there was a Conservative to Labour swing, as against 151 constituencies where there was a Labour to Conservative swing.
Polling predictions were closer
in the regional
vote, with all three pollsters have an average error
below 2 % on the 4 main parties.
While the Liberal Democrats are obviously a long way
below the share of the
vote they achieved at the General Election, they have recovered from the despairs of Kennedy's ousting and, if anything, the trend now seems to once again be
in their favour, with the last three published
polls all showing small increases
in their support.

57 (1) Immediately after the close of the
poll, the deputy returning officer shall count the number of electors who appear by the
poll record to have
voted and on such record shall enter that number and draw a bold double line immediately
below the name of the elector who
voted last, and shall sign his or her name thereto, then,
in the presence and
in full view of the persons entitled to be present, as set out under subsection 42 (1), the deputy returning officer shall open the ballot box and proceed to count the number of valid ballots cast for each candidate and all other ballots therein giving full opportunity to those present to see each ballot and observe the procedure.
