with a tentative measurement made by CoGeNT in 2011.
Moreover, the theorists argue, SIMPs must interact
with ordinary matter, although much more weakly than

In fact, a particle
with some properties opposite to those of physicists» current favorite dark matter candidate — the weakly interacting massive particle, or
WIMP — would do just as good a job at explaining the stuff, a quartet of theorists says.
An international team of physicists is preparing XENON100, a simple experiment
with a huge ambition: to record the moment when a bit of dark matter — known as a weakly interacting massive particle, or
WIMP — smacks into the nucleus of an atom of liquid xenon, triggering a flash of light and an electric charge.
The surprising findings come as physicists wrestle
with conflicting results from experiments designed to detect dark matter directly on Earth (see «The ongoing
WIMP war»).
The «
WIMP wars» have raged since 1998, when the DAMA experiment in the Gran Sasso lab in Italy claimed its detector was sparkling
with particles that could be
WIMPs.
When he re-analysed the CoGeNT data for
WIMPs of lower energies too, he found a signal that might be consistent
with particles of dark matter (arxiv.org/abs/1204.3559).
A particle called the neutralino, for instance, is a type of
WIMP that's a perfect candidate for dark matter in part because it doesn't interact
with other particles much, and that would explain why nobody has yet detected it.
That fits
with one space - based whiff of dark matter but not three earthbound experiments that claimed to see lightweight
WIMPs.
The results back up intriguing models which say dark matter could be akin to normal matter in that it could be made of many kinds of particle,
with low - mass
WIMPs only one component.
It could also flesh out recent models that suggest
WIMPs are less able to interact
with normal matter than once thought.
Other models say that dark matter may be a mix of classic
WIMPs and
WIMP - like cousins that would interact
with each other via a hypothetical dark force.
A particle that interacts via gravity and the weak force but not
with photons fits the bill — and that is a
WIMP.
With classical
WIMPs in a bind, theorists have started expanding their descriptions of the particle, creating a sprawling landscape of
WIMP - like alternatives.
But, as
with the preference for
WIMPs over axions and sterile neutrinos, some physicists suspect the widespread distaste for modified gravity is at least partially due to the sociology of scientists rather than the scientific process itself.
Most of the
WIMPs would collide
with and annihilate one another at relativistic speeds, producing ordinary particles as a result.
The leading theoretical candidates are weakly interacting massive particles, or
WIMPs, which should occasionally collide
with ordinary atoms and create a telltale signal.
But theory says that
WIMPs should also brush shoulders
with normal atoms occasionally, producing signals we can detect.
While the results did not detect dark matter particles — known as «weakly interacting massive particles» or «
WIMPs» — the combination of record low radioactivity levels
with the size of the detector implies an excellent discovery potential in the years to come.
All the experiments rely on the same principle: detecting
WIMPs on the rare occasions when they collide
with an atomic nucleus.
The hunt for the
WIMP is a global competition, and competition being what it is, some other physicists think they have come up
with a better
WIMP trap.
At that temperature, vibrations in the germanium crystals virtually cease, eliminating jiggles that could interfere
with a
WIMP signal.
Even
with just a few detection events — «maybe five,» Sadoulet suggests — CDMS should be able to make a lower limit estimate of
WIMP mass and get an idea of the interaction rate, giving us a first glimpse at the properties of the cosmic dark stuff.
No experiment has yet conclusively detected
WIMPs, but CDMS has set the most stringent limits of any experiment on the strength of
WIMP interactions
with ordinary matter.
When a particle (such as a
WIMP) collides
with the detector, it creates crystal lattice vibrations (phonons) and releases electrons.
Physicists hope to detect it in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (
WIMPs) when they collide
with ordinary matter in underground detectors.
Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell from looking at cancer cells if they're
wimps or killers, so 80 of the 100 men
with prostate cancer choose surgery or radiation treatment, either right away or after first trying «active surveillance» (frequent PSA tests, exams, biopsies).
