What is not yet clear is the relative contribution to
birth outcomes of health professionals» attitudes, continuity of carer, midwife managed or community based care, and implementation of specific practices (such as continuous emotional and physical support throughout labour, use of
immersion in
water to ease labour pain, encouraging women to remain upright and mobile, minimising use of epidural analgesia, and home visits to diagnose labour before admission to
birth centre or hospital).
Not much is mentioned again about the technique until the 1960's when a Russian scientist, Igor Charcovsky, began experimenting with the use of warm
water immersion for women in labor to see how it affected their labor, the
birth, and newborn behavior.
In other countries, the prevalence of
water immersion varies with
birth setting and cultural factors (2, 3).
Outcomes indicating safety or risk in association with
immersion at one stage of labor may not translate into equivalent outcomes at a different stage of labor; specifically, outcomes during the first stage of labor may not be the same as outcomes associated with
birth under
water.

I will need to read the paper more closely to comment on the relationship between
immersion and duration of labor; in a prior study I found that women who had longer labors were more likely to be removed from the
water for medical reasons and so would never be counted in the
water birth group.2
In 1988 she founded Waterbirth International after researching
water immersion as a gentle
birth option for mother and child.
