The cumulative impact, say
the West Sussex heads, is that over the past five years, «school age children in each London borough have, on average, received # 1bn more school funding than their counterparts in West Sussex».
Last year, the «least fairly funded» councils received additional funding, with
West Sussex being given # 930,000.
But the joint letter - from representatives of councils including Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Devon, Hampshire, Leicestershire,
West Sussex and Wiltshire - says: «We are struggling to understand where more cuts can be made in the lowest funded authorities.»
For two years I had responsibility for developing the quality of teaching and learning at the primary school in
West Sussex I worked at.
Four of the proposed schools are due to open in London and the others are planned for Suffolk,
West Sussex, Norwich and Leicester.
The heads are in 17 authorities with many Conservative MPs, in Brighton, Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, East Sussex, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Peterborough, Suffolk, Surrey, Thurrock,
West Sussex and Wokingham.
The headteachers of 250 state schools in
West Sussex wrote to the prime minister Theresa May in October last year to say they needed # 20 million in emergency funding.
The letter has been signed by primary, secondary and special school heads from a number of counties in England including
West Sussex, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Devon and Cornwall.
«The scale of the funding differences between low - funded counties when compared to areas such as London is beyond belief,» says Jules White,
a West Sussex head who has co-ordinated the protests.

Many secondary schools in places such as Buckinghamshire,

Schools in Southport, Suffolk, London, County Durham, Hertfordshire and
West Sussex will receive a share of # 1.2 million to become new research hubs.
Teacher Development Trust will identify schools to act as «CPD excellence hubs» in Blackpool, Northumberland, Sheffield, Stoke and
West Sussex.
Every state school head teacher in
West Sussex signed a joint letter to the prime minister warning that they could have to cut school hours because of a lack of funding.
Or what more progress could be supported in other areas on the bottom rungs for funding, such as York, Leicestershire and
West Sussex.
