I think about rate increases being very much tied to what the fed might do, a rate increase or two, how that might affect the Canadian currency.
If we don't hear about ETFs and hedge funds blowing up after what happened yesterday, it means the PPT (NY Fed + the Treasury's Working Group on Financial Markets — the «PPT» — which both have offices in the same building in lower Manhattan) has monetized and covered up those financial road - side bombs.
The guest doesn't seem to have a clue about what he is talking and what I love about it is how arrogant the dude is about the business that he owns and the work that he does (which he makes it sound more important than feeding the hungry children of Africa or something).
It is an economic problem that the Fed's tools would be particularly ill suited to solve; the Fed can help address weak demand in the economy but can't do much about a negative supply shock, which is what a trade war would be.
What was noteworthy about the Fed's announcement was a changes made to language about inflation.
Some worry about what will happen to them in the months ahead, especially if the Fed's eventual interest - rate increase becomes a trigger for capital flight.
But investors will be most attuned to what Powell signals at his first news conference about whether and how he might steer the Fed's policymaking differently from his predecessor, Janet Yellen.
And it's going to be interesting to see what happens because President Trump has been very quiet about the Fed.

In portraying Bill Niskanen as a monetary policy radical, I've limited myself to his views on the Fed and central banking more generally, without venturing to consider what he had to say about other financial regulatory agencies.
Not only will market watchers keep a close eye on what the lead bank does, but they also will pay close attention to what the Fed says about its future monetary course, which we now think will include some three rate increases each in 2017 and 2018.
