Unrecognized by the official Irish Kennel Club
until 1937 (even though they had been going by the breed name of Soft Coated
Wheaten Terrier for nearly 200 years by then), it took another 6 years
until the British Kennel Club recognized the breed — and almost 40 more for the breed to become recognized by the American Kennel Club.
History: Soft Coated
Wheaten Terriers have an origin from Ireland and were used as farm herders and hunters of vermin. The
Wheaten is probably one of the oldest irish dog breeds and was introduced to the USA in 1946, but not recognized by the AKC
until 1973.
