The BLM seeks public comment on a proposal to recommend the Browns Canyon area as
a Wilderness Study Area.
Browns Canyon National Monument, including
the Wilderness Study Area, helps produce clean water by protecting watersheds, provides critical wildlife habitat, maintains biological diversity, offers outdoor recreation opportunities, provides scenic beauty and serves as a spiritual or psychological haven from modern day pressures.
A BLM
Wilderness Study Area and an adjacent U.S. Forest Service Roadless Area offer only interim protections for 20,000 acres of wilderness - quality terrain.
The act directs the agency to inventory its lands and identify areas with certain characteristics as
wilderness study areas, areas that Congress would then designate as wilderness or open for other uses.

areas, how well the land's ecosystems are represented within existing protected
areas, and whether a place is rich in rare and endemic species.
