The Irish
wolfhound stands a metre high and weighs as much as 30 chihuahuas, but the difference in size between the two is due to a single gene, which
comes in one form in the large animal and another in the small.

There is evidence that the Dane's more elegant appearance may have
come from an infusion of Irish
Wolfhound blood and some fanciers claim the English Mastiff as the progenitor of this breed, but the dog may indeed be a descendant of both.
From the little Italian greyhound to the huge Irish
wolfhound, sighthounds
come in a range of sizes and breeds but are built for speed, with long bodies and legs, broad chests and very little body fat.
The Irish
Wolfhound has a particularly short lifespan even for a large breed of dog with lifespan estimates
coming in anywhere from between 5 - 10 years.
Other breeds
came from Arabian traders around the Horn of Africa and with Asian immigrants, particularly into the Cape Colony, and jackal coursing introduced from British India brought lurchers from England and Ireland and the borzoi or Russian
wolfhound, and before the era of standardised modern breeds, several breeds may have more rarely contributed to Rhodesian Ridgeback genetics.
