Over the last year, there's been a core group of people that
our worker bees at MDA have gotten to know exceptionally well — a group of people that have gone above and beyond in their involvement in all things primal.

at the Swiss Bee Research Center in Bern, discovered that as soon as the beetles enter a hive,
worker bees in the colony surround them and force them to immediately pull their legs under their carapaces, adopting what is known as the «turtle» protective posture.
Last year scientists learned that
worker bees silence misinformed wagglers by climbing atop them and vibrating
at a specific frequency.
A closer look
at how honey
bee colonies determine which larvae will serve as
workers and which will become queens reveals that a plant chemical, p - coumaric acid, plays a key role in the
bees» developmental fate.
Recently, Paul Sherman, an animal behaviorist
at Cornell, and Timothy Judd, a graduate student
at Colorado State University, have observed another hive - like trait among the pink, gerbil - size animals: some of them behave —
at least in laboratory colonies — like selfless
worker bees, providing food for the rest of a sometimes indolent colony.
It will prevent disaster and confusion
at the hive, by stopping even more
bees joining in the nectar rush when there are already so many coming back to the hive with nectar that the food storing
workers can not cope with the influx.
Here, we first demonstrated that Acks signals were detected in the MBs, especially in the Class II KCs of
workers at 30 or 60 min after the
bee ball formation, and neurons located in a restricted area between the DLs and the OLs of
workers at 60 min whereas they were scarcely detected
at 0 min (Figure 4, Figure S3, and Figure S4), strongly suggesting that these neurons are highly activated in the brains of
workers involved in forming the hot defensive
bee ball.
A
worker hornet with its stinger cut off and hung by a wire around its thorax, was presented to the
bees at the entrance of the beehive.

This results in nearly empty beehives that,
at best, may harbor a queen and a small
worker bee population.
We sampled the
bees at the same time points as in the previous experiments under room temperature for up to 150 min after seizure induction (
at 180 min, the
workers died).
We expected that Acks signals detected
at 0 min (in
bee ball formation experiment) or in control
bees (in heat - exposure and IAA - exposure experiments) would reflect background level neural activity and the neural activity in the
workers forming a
bee ball, heat - exposed or IAA - exposed
workers could be considerably increased.

Natural selection should eliminate such behaviors, yet there are many examples (alarm calling in squirrels, helpers
at the nest in scrub jays, sterile
worker castes in honey
bees etc.) in which animals appear to cooperate despite an apparent disadvantage to the donor.

There may or may not be some nefarious intent
at work within all of this — dumb down the American population to turn them into good little, unquestioning
worker bees for the oligarchy.
The structure of a honeybee hive is both fascinating and highly complex — a pod of thousands of female
worker bees, a few hundred male drones in the summer and,
at the epicentre, the queen.
Her education stopped
at age 12, she hopped from country to country and lived (as she describes on her website) as a «
worker bee child in a communal apocalyptic cult.»
If you look
at an RB as a
worker bee rather than a creative individual, you'll miss their full potential and reduce the amount of ownership and passion they feel for their work.
My own guess is that «
worker bee» partners who aren't really rainmakers benefit most from a move in - house: Not only are they freed from the task of bringing in business but, presumably, they earned less than their breadwinning colleagues
at the law firm.
