In an excerpt from his keynote speech at October's Poets &
Writers Live event in Portland, Oregon, Lopez gives us an answer to why we tell stories.
The second Poets &
Writers Live event was held on June 21, 2014, at Scandinavia House in New York City, and featured agents, editors, and authors engaged in panel discussions and conversation about how to sustain the writing life, the many reasons why we write, the author - agent relationship, and how agents and editors work together on behalf of writers.

The
writers insisted that God's Word is about something and what it is most immediately about is a historical
event: the
life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and the inbreaking of the kingdom he inaugurates.

I like attending
events such as this because on top of the joy of meeting new
writers, it's always nice to hear advice directly from the pros — the ones who actually do this for a
living.

Yet, there is so much even fiction
writers can share via a blog (how they create characters, do their research, write; facts about their novel's location, food, climate, famous sites and people; and tidbits on their struggles with plot development, daily

Generally, I don't recommend trying to get into bookstores or focusing on
live events such as book signings, but it's important to address WHY I don't recommend them, since most first time authors will persist in achieving visual markers that match the «
