Balanced against that, the lower powered diesels can be a little gruff, just like the
XEs, and the interior, while well screwed together, doesn't look or feel especially classy.
Unlike rivals from Mercedes - Benz and BMW, Jaguar doesn't offer a six - cylinder diesel
XE, which is a silky smooth powerplant in the bigger XF.
Technically, only the BMW 3 - Series GT
does that in this segment, and as yet there's no
XE estate.
The
XE has
done a successful job of enhancing Jaguar's reputation as a builder of high - ranking mainstream cars, easily capable of taking on its rivals and beating them, and now it's a serious contender if you're after a desirable used purchase, too.

did so by pumping itself up with the Pathfinder - based 3.3 L V - 6, available in SE and
XE King Cab 4x4s.
But it
does have the sort of top - end pace and smoothness that the diesels
do not, so if you're less bothered about running costs and more concerned by getting the most refined
XE experience possible, it's the one to go for.
Saying that, even the entry level
XE, with an auto and a 197bhp 2.0 - litre petrol engine, returns just 45.1 mpg on the combined cycle — which means getting 40mpg in real life will be
doing well.
I may start telling people that Jaguar
does German sport luxury better than the Germans after driving this
XE.
With 178bhp, it doesn't make the
XE particularly quick, but it doesn't labour at very low revs, so you can comfortably leave it in a high gear around town as long as you don't want lively acceleration.
Jaguar didn't hold anything back when it built the
XE SV Project 8.
What I don't get though is they put the very distinctive Alfa Romeo front end on it, then the doors look like they came off the 3 - series and the tail lights oculd have come from an Audi, Jag
XE, Kia / Hyundai, they just look boring.
Part of it isn't Jaguar's fault because a car like the
XE SV Project 8 doesn't illicit the same level of awe as the J50 and the Centenerio.
But at the end of the day, something about the
XE just didn't feel special enough to justify the price.
Some material choices are questionable as well: Even on the top - trim
XE R - Sport, the seat leather feels inexpensive and slippery, and there is hard plastic on the door sills and armrest that
do the opposite of surprise and delight.
Well, Miller continued by saying the 5.0 - liter supercharged V - 8 used elsewhere in Jaguar's «R» - branded cars
does fit into the
XE's engine bay.
Viewed from most angles, the
XE appears elegant, although its low - slung front end

XE sedan, and the range - topping 35t will
do a superb job at upholding the performance mantle.

XE, that doesn't expose much of the car's design, which will borrow cues from the new Jaguars - F - Type, XJ and XF.
Don't expect the C - Class to win any handling contests in the compact executive segment, which is dynamically dominated by the likes of Jaguar's
XE, Cadillac ATS or Lexus IS.
A stiffer suspension option might be nice as you don't have to push too hard before the
XE starts to lean more than you'd like, but it's still an entertaining thing to drive quickly - particularly since it's surprisingly happy to light up its rear tyres both off the line and mid-corner.

XE small sedan is one of those rare cars that focuses purely on performance, and the team at Jag's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) skunkworks doesn't seem to want to let it go.
These engines don't sound that different until you look at the detail — the XR's engine is much more advanced than the
XE's.
If you don't need this much horsepower and a six - speed transmission (the base
XE has a four - speed automatic), you can save several thousand.
And don't overlook the saloon - only Jaguar
XE; it's great to drive, but is cramped.
