On Tuesday, Roku and Comcast announced that the two companies would soon be making
Xfinity TV available on Roku streaming media players via a new
Xfinity TV app, now entering a public beta.
The announcement of this beta isn't a total surprise, as we've known that Comcast was working toward a Roku app since April of last year, when the company announced
the Xfinity TV Partner Program.
Using a Roku device or Samsung smart TV, you'll be able to take advantage of
your Xfinity TV cable service without the additional (and arguably unnecessary) costs of renting a Comcast set - top box.
While
the Xfinity TV app won't be available on every single Roku model, it's pretty close.
If you're both a Comcast
Xfinity TV subscriber and an owner of one or more Roku devices, you'll soon be able to use one less remote.
What's more, you'll still get
the Xfinity TV guide, live and on demand programming, and, perhaps most important, cloud DVR recording.
Roku wasn't the only partner mentioned:
Xfinity TV support was also announced for Samsung Smart TVs at the time.
To do that, you need only to download
the Xfinity TV app beta to your Roku device, connect your account, and you'll be good to go.
«On conclusion of the trial, you will be informed of the charges that will apply for connecting this device with
your Xfinity TV service and will have the opportunity to opt in,» the FAQ says, as initially reported by Variety.
If you're a Comcast customer, you can try a beta version of
the Xfinity TV app for Roku.
This was followed by an announcement that Sony Android TVs would also be joining
the Xfinity TV Partner program.
Rather than simply calling it digital cable, Comcast refers to
Xfinity TV as an «entertainment operating system» due to the way it blends streaming and standard cable features.

the Xfinity TV Partner app, which lets certain streaming hardware and smart TVs access live and on - demand programming as well as DVR recordings.
In November, nonfiction documentary programming subscription service CuriosityStream was added to
Xfinity TV's video - on - demand options.
Xfinity TV aims to take everything that you like about cable — hundreds of channels, local programming, and full - fledged DVR options — and combine it with features that you are likely familiar with from your favorite streaming services.
With
Xfinity TV, the same goes for your DVR recordings thanks to the service's Cloud DVR feature, with lets you take your recordings with you on the road.
To use the Xfinity X1 DVR, you'll need to subscribe to
both Xfinity TV service and internet service.
While there are a number of options out there for digital cable, Comcast's
Xfinity TV aims to offer a more modern experience than the competition.
Xfinity TV has a good on - demand selection, and we like that they have a combined normal and cloud DVR service.
