When I came here [to South Carolina] and beg [a] n studying with Jean Pilk, who had studied for years with Daniel Greene, [she] directed me to use a palette of Cadmium Red light with
Yellow Ochre as a base.

As for the overall color palette, Free People focused on grays, dark greens, burgundy and light - blue shades, leaving it up to the cheerful pops of red
ochre and
yellow to revamp the entire collection.
David Ryan's Set 2 (c) also seems to have some doubling going on, this time within the one painting, in the repetition of rectangles that occupy different spaces, one in lime green, one in
yellow ochre and one in white,
as well
as the containing rectangle of the support.

While a. number of the paintings in this show are unexceptional (such
as Weekapaug or Prudhoe, with their blandly white or black central images and tailored edging vectors in neutral shades like plum brown, subdued orange, or
yellow ochre), the series
as a whole
Sometimes there is no immediately discernible face at all,
as in the pseudo self - portrait Enrico Aphid, 2011, a meeting of brown,
ochre, and a blob of hideous
yellow.
So it photographs
as though they're just those figures on a plain tone instead of actually on a bright red square that has a
yellow ochre border.
These shades are repeatedly used throughout his oeuvre;
as he commented, «There are certain colors that have become my colors; they're
yellow ochre, black and white, a certain ultramarine blue (in fact some people in New York call it «Motherwell blue»)».

as it dances over treetops.
More recent paintings, such
as Naturalist, and Approach, have almost entirely done away with recognizable landscape elements, yet the palette of deep umbers, cerulean blue,
yellow, pink - tinged
ochre, and their sense of space connect these paintings to a sensibility deeply rooted in the natural world.
