When Minimalist earthworks artist Walter De Maria died in July of last year, New York art critic Jerry Saltz wrote a commemorative essay comparing the sculptor's signature geometric abstractions to his sprawling and lush Earth Room (1977)-- an entire NYC loft filled with 280,000 pounds of dirt.
