The company said it is seeing «strong shipments» of Moto Mods and the Moto
Z phones they work with, singling out sales in Brazil and India in particular, and it introduced new Mods just this week.

The company has been making Android
phones for over half a decade, with the height of their
work being seen in the Xperia
Z series of smartphones.
Like previous Moto Mods it attaches directly to a compatible
phone — currently the Moto
Z, Moto
Z Force and also brand new Moto
Z Play will
work — magnetically and via a series of contacts on the back of the device.
Where many OEMs are
working hard to cut on the size of bezels, the Moto X 2017 renders show off a device that has quite large bezels and also significantly thick, an indicator that the
phone will indeed be a midranger and nothing close to the Moto
Z flagship.
And so, it announced that the two companies are
working together on a Moto Mod for the Moto
Z series that has always - on listening, even when the
phone's locked.
All three Mods attach to the
phone using the same magnetic alignment and pins as the original Moto
Z lineup used, meaning all of the Mods will
work with older devices as well.
The Moto
Z Force Droid shows how a modular
phone can
work without compromising on the design of the core
phone.
Even though it puts out pretty good sound, the Soundboost mod will
work with only a Moto
Z phone; in contrast, a Bluetooth speaker is compatible with pretty much anything.
For its part, Motorola offers a Moto Mods development kit, and promises «Moto Mods developed today are designed to
work with future - generation Moto
Z phones.»
Like the iterations after it, the Moto
Z (and its US - only, Verizon - only counterpart Moto
Z Force)
worked with magnetic Moto Mods accessories, which changed up and added to the
phone's functionality.
Even better, Motorola claims all current and upcoming Moto Mods will
work with the next generation of Moto
Z phones, which will likely be launched sometime in 2018.
Okay, they may not technically be «modular» accessories since they attach to the back of Moto
Z phones via magnets, but it's the next best thing, and these Moto Mods
work really well.
Moto Mods will
work with this generation Moto
Z devices and «are designed to
work with future generation Moto
Z phones» as well.
Bluetooth still
works in the V30 (LG and others have had Aptx - HD in their
phones for years now) and you're not getting any better of a Bluetooth experience on the Pixel, the iPhone, or the Moto
Z without investing tons of money.
If you own a Moto
Z phone or plan to buy one soon, you can buy Moto Mod add - ons safe in the knowledge they will also
work with the third generation of flagship Moto
Z phones.
It means if you buy the new Moto
Z2 Play or
Z2 Force - or if you own the Moto
Z,
Z Play or
Z Force - along with some Moto Mods you can be safe in the knowledge these will
work again if you decide to upgrade your
phone later.
As far as the front cameras go, both
phones are utilizing a 5 MP sensor, which
work well enough for taking selfies, but the Moto
Z has an advantage here with its front - facing flash, which can be extremely helpful when taking selfies in low light.
Phones that
work with that system include the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, Motorola Moto
Z, Huawei Mate 9 Pro, and ZTE Axon 7.
They'll also likely
work with the first generation Moto
Z, since that
phone is the one they've been built for.
The good news is that Motorola says that Moto Mods developed today will
work with future Moto
Z phones.
There is no shred of doubt that the Moto
Z is a flamboyant
phone, however, many will relish
working with the Moto Mods accessories, something that comes as a separate package from the
phone.
In the end, the Moto
Z Play is a very well positioned
phone for general consumers who just want their smartphone to
work and power users who can get the most out of Moto Mods, alike.
If so, that means the Moto
Z Play and Moto
Z2 Play would not
work with it, since both
phones do not support Daydream.
The Moto
Z's rivals — the LG G5, Google's Project Ara prototypes, and a line of iPhone cases from OtterBox that lets you attach modularized hardware accessories — all take an approach to modularity that
works like a Mr. Potato Head, where you plug different pieces of hardware into different parts of a
phone.
In terms of specification the new model is pretty much the same as the Moto
Z2 Force but comes with a new name and is being promoted as the flagship model in China.The device is still the same size with a 5.5 - inch display which makes it easier to use all old Moto
Z mods with the
phone and any new ones that get released will
work on all three generations of the device.
That's allowing Motorola to tout the Moto
Z and
Z Force as the first
phones outside of Google's to officially
work with the Daydream platform, even though the Axon 7 has been available since the summer.
And they'll
work with future generation moto
z phones too.
