The Zachariae
ice stream is about twice the size of Jakobshavn, extending some 373 miles into the interior.
Greenland's
ice streams drain the ice sheet via meltwater runoff much in the same way that water basins drain rivers, explained Bevis.
In comparison, it took the Jakobshavn Isbræ
ice stream — a southwest Greenland region with a fast - moving glacier that has been a focal point of scientific examination of ice sheet melt — 150 years to retreat 35 kilometers, said Khan.
Scientists discover an important clue in predicting future consequences of climate change: the mechanism that moves
ice streams
This water will rush beneath the ice towards the sea and feed into the hydrological catchment of the MacAyeal Ice Stream, one of several major
ice streams draining ice from Marie Byrd Land into the Ross Ice Shelf.
The rift system is thought to have a major influence on
ice streams in West Antarctica.
«That's the total holy grail right now, to see if we can pin down the response of
the ice stream to lakes» filling and draining,» says Helen Fricker of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego.
It's one of the largest
ice streams draining the West Antarctic ice sheet, hundreds of kilometres long and about 100 kilometres wide.
What is it that you find intriguing about
that ice stream?
You have been studying the Whillans
ice stream in West Antarctica.
These flow rates are unprecedented: they appear to be the fastest ever recorded for any glacier or
ice stream in Greenland or Antarctica, the researchers say.
Lead author Dr Malcolm McMillan from the University of Leeds said: «We find that ice losses continue to be most pronounced along the fast - flowing
ice streams of the Amundsen Sea sector, with thinning rates of between 4 and 8 metres per year near to the grounding lines of the Pine Island, Thwaites and Smith Glaciers.»
The new result focuses on ice loss due to a major retreat of an outlet glacier connected to a long «river» of ice — known as
an ice stream — that drains ice from the interior of the ice sheet.
Increased ice flow in this region is particularly troubling, Khan said, because the northeast
ice stream stretches more than 600 kilometers (about 373 miles) into the center of the ice sheet, where it connects with the heart of Greenland's ice reservoir.
For comparison, one of the fastest moving glaciers, the Jakobshavn
ice stream in southwest Greenland, has retreated 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) over the last 150 years.
Ice streams drain ice basins, the same way the Amazon River drains the very large Amazon water basin.
The Zachariae
ice stream retreated about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) over the last decade, the researchers concluded.
Zachariae is the largest
ice stream in a drainage basin that covers 16 percent of the Greenland ice sheet — an area twice as large as the one drained by Jakobshavn.
«It was literally one of the first days that we were driving across
the ice stream, doing what we thought was a pretty standard survey, that I saw the bed of the ice just dropping away,» Bingham said.

Likewise, Lake Mercer will provide unique information on the history of both the Whillans and Mercer
ice streams.

The rates at which the grounding lines of
the ice streams recede will increase.
Subglacial Lake Mercer lies below the confluence of the Whillans and Mercer
ice streams, making its hydrology distinct within the region.
It's a positive feedback cycle, a viscious loop that means that future recession of
the ice stream is inevitable (see Marine Ice Sheet Instability and previous post).

Diagnostic modelling can be used to improve the understanding of the processes controlling the behaviour of a particular
ice stream, or to study the importance of one or more physical process in an ice sheet in general.

The ice streams in Antarctica will be flowing rapidly due to basal sliding — so it is incorrect to say that all glaciers are flowing by internal deformation only.
Shortly after radio - echo sounding was introduced in Antarctica, radio - echo flights during the 1969 - 1970 austral summer identified five

The Marguerite Bay drainage basin, in contrast, would have been of the order of 10,000 to 100,000 km2 during the LGM, and
the ice streams draining this basin would have responded more rapidly to changes in external forcing [47].
