It is tempting to use a quiet, brilliant child who has already mastered most of the academic work of the classroom as a
tutor or teacher's assistant, especially when there are 30 children in the class, school policies discourage acceleration or
ability grouping, enrichment materials are not available, and the gifted education program has been cut.
Time with a literacy
tutor is just one of many interventions that Braeburn uses when dividing into different
ability groups in the classroom just won't cut it.
After analyzing the data and writing each case we found that four components stood out as consistently prominent across all the schools: a broad and deep curriculum designed for all students with little tracking or
ability grouping (meaning that most students get the same high quality learning experiences in all classes); a teaching staff with advanced content knowledge; a mission - focused administrative structure with a flattened hierarchy that invited collaboration with and among teachers and students; and supports for underrepresented students, such as advisories with personalized college planning,
tutoring or summer research programs on college campuses.

When gifted students are placed in mixed -
ability groups for cooperative learning, they frequently become
tutors.
Using keywords and specialized terms that indicate areas of expertise, the candidate quickly and succinctly imparts expert knowledge of
tutoring methods in biology and physics, student assessment,
group tutoring, and exams while demonstrating the
ability to collaborate with faculty and staff.
