There really hasn't been any other game that follows this format — Sega's Phantasy Star III is about as closest as you can get, but neither the plot nor the characterizations are nearly as fleshed out as they are here.

See, if people wanted to, they could buy Arks Cash every month to get the premium services, which would make it seem like a sub fee, but it's not, because it's not required since it is a free to play game (unless you like to have the services all the time).
