Over and over again we hear School Nutrition Association members say things like, «If it weren't for my director, I wouldn't have applied for my scholarship,» and «My manager told
me about SNA, and encouraged me to become a member.»
In a piece on Politico Pro (subscription only) earlier this week, food policy reporter Helena Bottemiller Evich asked SNA President Julia Bauscher
about the SNA's funding request and was told:
«One of the things I love
about SNA is that diverse audience — front - line workers... and top - level directors.»
The letter would appear to indicate that any optimism
about SNA changing course is not justified.

So when Poppendieck herself came by The Lunch Tray yesterday and took me to task for some things I've recently written
about the School Nutrition Association (
SNA), the nation's leading organization of school food professionals, you can imagine how hard that criticism hit home.
But we do need to be clear
about what
SNA means to accomplish, regardless of the term it employs.
And
SNA's recent actions and statements have left a lot of people scratching their heads in dismay — including the First Lady, who seemed blindsided last year by
SNA's
about - face on the HHFKA standards.

about the origins and purpose of the open letter.

SNA's «urgent message» was clearly designed to make any school food director think long and hard
about adding his or her name to this letter.
SNA does make a good point
about cost... while my participation is back to where it was, my food costs are
about 25 % higher (some due to the new requirements, some due to weather / gas / transportation / etc).

about - face, embarking on an aggressive lobbying campaign to weaken school meal nutrition.
