For the purpose of this post I am thinking
about airline miles, hotel points, credit card points, supermarket points — ie digital tokens tied to a company or group of companies.

about travel, you want points that give you the option to turn them into real

This is worth taking into consideration when thinking

airline card or loyalty program because you want to earn
miles you can actually use based on where you travel.

airlines.
A note
about their
miles: They're not really «
miles» because they can't be used directly with the
airline as
miles, they're basically points that convert at 1 % to a cash statement credit you can use to reimburse yourself for travel purchases you've charged to the card.
Don't worry, some of the best credit cards for
airline miles let you transfer their
miles to a number of different rewards programs so you can earn
miles without worrying
about one particular carrier.
Now that you understand a little
about what
airline miles are and how they work, let's go into detail on how to earn and use rewards.
There's an
airline miles trick that
airlines do not want you to know

Try to avoid transferring points from the
airline's only transfer partner, Starwood Preferred Guest, because you'll lose
about 30 percent of their value compared to programs that use
miles.

The best thing to remember
about this process is that the goal is to spend the minimum you need to, preferably on things you'd already be spending money on, just to receive the sign - up bonuses and free
airline miles.

Airlines miles to fly in business class or 120,000
miles to experience first class.
Given that I often write
about mileage runs (flying for the purpose of accumulating
airline miles), people seem to assume that's the best place to get started.
With travel, we're talking
about anything from points that can be redeemed for a wide range of options around the world, to
miles that can only be redeemed for airfare at a handful of
airlines.
There's no worry
about flying with one particular
airline (the
airline miles part) and you can use the points for things like car rentals and hotels (the travel rewards part).
If you're thinking
about booking the Brussels
Airlines business class flight for 36,625 Etihad
miles from JFK to BRU, you would only need to budget an extra 3,663
miles to book a lap child ticket.
Citi Double Cash: If you're okay without any intro bonus at all, and don't care
about real
airline miles, it's tough to beat double cash on everything you spend.
So, a $ 100 flight ticket can be awarded for the equivalent of
about 5,800 American
Airlines miles.
If you don't stay in hotels often enough that you care
about earning hotel points, some hotel brands, such as Best Western and Marriott will let you earn
miles with your chosen
airline rather than earning points for hotel stays.
This means you could be awarded a $ 100 flight ticket for the equivalent of
about 5,800 American
Airlines miles.
