About 18 million people in the United States have an
alcohol use disorder.
When the participants turned 25, they were again asked
about their
alcohol use and assessed for
alcohol use disorders.
The current study differs from previous investigations in that — instead of relying only on participants» answers to survey questions
about their
use of stimulants and other drugs,
alcohol consumption and other factors including quality of life — it relied on structured interviews that have been validated for the diagnosis of neuropsychiatric
disorders, including substance -
use disorders.
Figures from the National Institute on
Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reveal that as of 2014,
about 16.3 million American adults had
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).
«The results change our thinking
about how
alcohol responses affect the development of an
alcohol -
use disorder,» said Andrea King, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Chicago and lead author of the study.
«Because
alcohol problems may not appear for several years, it is important that doctors routinely ask patients with a history of bariatric surgery
about their
alcohol consumption and whether they are experiencing symptoms of
alcohol use disorder, and are prepared to refer them to treatment,» King said in a journal news release.
In addition, the investigators found that rates of
alcohol use disorder — sometimes called «alcoholism» — rose from 8.5 percent (
about 18 million people) in 2001 - 2002 to 13 percent (nearly 30 million people) in 2012 - 2013.
The findings «highlight the urgency of educating the public, policymakers and health care professionals
about high - risk drinking and
alcohol use disorder, destigmatizing these conditions, and encouraging those who can not reduce their
alcohol consumption on their own — despite substantial harm to themselves and others — to seek treatment,» Grant and her colleagues concluded.
Box 3 also includes clinical judgements
about compliance, whether
alcohol or cannabis was currently
used at clinically significant levels, and whether their
use contributed to the onset of the psychotic
disorders.
