woman stares confidently at the viewer and it
is obvious that she
is the master of her own fate,» Cafritz writes, clearly inspired by its symbolism as a statement
about her own life.
As well as
being the first
woman and the first
painter to win the prize in almost a decade, after years of artists with personas as feverishly worked upon as their art, here
was someone
about whom we knew practically nothing: 38 years old, from Kiel in Germany but resident in London for the past 12 years, and (rumour had it) the former girlfriend of Chris Ofili - that
's pretty much it.
I had never really thought
about that, but there
was this kind of overblown macho masculinity thing, and the
women painters who
were involved sort of had to
be that way, too.
Indeed, a recent Netflix documentary
about Herrera titled The 100 Years Show saw the Cuban - American abstract
painter recall how she
was told by gallery owners — female themselves — that she couldn't exhibit her work at their venues because she
was a
woman.
But I also wondered
about your position as a «
woman painter» — someone who
is making these paintings from the position of the
woman artist.
In the late 50's Life magazine pronounced her «the most celebrated of the young American
women painters,» Newsweek featured her in a column next to one
about Judy Garland, and she
was the only
woman represented in «The New American Painting» exhibition that introduced contemporary American art to Europe in 1958 - 59.

The Prize will expand opportunities for the public, who may not
be familiar with figurative realist painting, to learn more
about the creative vision of talented
women painters in this increasingly popular genre.
I found it a real joy to discover so many
women painters, and even though Abstract Expressionism isn't my favourite genre by any means it
was exciting to discover so much more
about the movement itself and the
women who
were part of it.

What
is it
about women painters that make them so hard for the cultural apparatus to deal with?
Simons, showcased in Frédéric Tcheng's hiply elegant Dior and I, prowled art galleries for ideas
about Dior's 2012 fall - winter
women's line, settling on
painter Sterling Ruby (the so - called guerrilla Gerhard Richter) as a major inspiration, and effectively story - boarded the collection, which
was not ready until hours before its triumphant debut show.
