Even though Radical Presence is
about black artists working in performance, the subtext is that it is about performance art coming from the visual spectrum and the fact that you can pick up any book on performance and not see these artists in that book.
The bottom line is that it's not
about black artists — though I would never deny that that's an interest of mine — but it's about how to broaden the discussion of things that really define contemporary art practice.
Only by understanding these histories — histories by black artists as much as
about black artists — can we move forward towards a different and collectively imagined future.
