Whatever you think of the claims
about coal exports and coal - related jobs (several critics of Mr. McCain pounced on that statement), it does seem quite a stark turnabout for the candidate.
Sightline is releasing a new and updated research backgrounder today: it's a «frequently asked questions»
about coal exports from the Northwest.
In the new version of «Northwest Coal Exports» we set out some basic facts
about coal exports: how much North America currently exports, what the new proposals involve, and what the pollution consequences might be.
Cant leave out Australia when you're talking
about coal exports.
Not exact matches
But ask a Canadian politician, and you'll likely hear a drum beat of talking points
about China's voracious energy appetite and the imperative to ramp up our oil, gas, and
coal exports.
As North American producers massively ramp up plans to
export coal to Asia, B.C. figures large in their plans — and in opposition efforts of citizens worried
about climate change.
The European Union is by far the biggest customer for U.S.
coal, with
exports to the UK alone going up by
about 70 percent in 2012.
However, more than 20 percent —
about 118 million tons — of that
coal was reportedly shipped overseas, accounting for
about 10 percent of worldwide
coal exports in 2013, the year for which latest data are available.
Over and over, in considering the press
about Australia» «pioneering» carbon law, i keep circling back to those unaffected
coal exports (which I've written on before).
Factor in the «carbon light» CO2 from
coal seam gas projects in the East (and other LNG expansion in the north and west) and you're talking
about Australia's fossil fuel emission
exports equating to TWO Saudi Arabias by 2020, not one as I've been saying to many disbelieving ears.
* The government insists that dealing with global warming is way down the priority list and since our economy is booming because of mineral
exports (including heaps of
coal don't you know) we should concentrate on that and not get too worried
about the water situation.
Perhaps you've already noticed the $ 60 billion
coal deal with China, under which Australia will mine
about 600 million tons of
coal for
export to China:
That said, I think Andrew may have been wondering
about which COUNTRY has to count the emissions toward their cap or target — the country that
exports the
coal, the country that makes (say) the cars, or the country that buys them?
I was talking
about exporting that technology to China so when they burn their dirty
coal, it won't be as dirty, it will be clean.
«Hopes are still high» for his backing, said Lauri Hennessey, a spokesperson for the Alliance for Northwest Jobs and
Exports, which comprises
about 40
coal companies, transportation firms, labor unions and regional business councils.
The U.S. government forecasters at EIA expect that U.S.
coal exports will fall back to
about 110 million tons per year over the next two years, due to economic weakness in Europe, falling international prices, and competition from other
coal -
exporting countries.
Companies are angling to build two
export facilities in Washington State from which 100 million tons of
coal would be shipped to China, Japan and South Korea a year —
about the same as what the United States
exports now from East Coast and Gulf ports.
Since Australia is reliant upon
coal primarily for energy and for
exports, it's pretty obvious who looks to lose - out if the climate scientists persuade the Australian Public
about the scientific facts.
One of the attendees — who wasn't a Cloud Peak employee — suggested that mental health advocates travel to the Pacific Northwest, to advocate for controversial
coal export terminals by telling locals
about the urgency of Gillette's situation..
For instance, South Africa, which depends on local
coal for
about 77 percent of its energy needs and raises revenue from
exports (it is the world's fourth largest exporter), says it is not going to give up on
coal for at least two decades.
On May 29, 2012 the Seattle City Council unanimously passed a resolution opposing the development of
coal -
export terminals in Washington state after raising concerns
about increased train traffic and potential harm to health and the environment.
This Wednesday, July 26, neighborhood citizens and members from the Sierra Club and Chesapeake Climate Action Network delivered comments
about the main concerns of the people affected most by the
coal dust that flows from the
export terminal.
«We are concerned
about the
exporting of
coal to overseas markets in that there are no environmental standards once the
coal leaves our borders.
At the tail end of the hearing, Sen. Landrieu asked Weiss
about the contention that there is little difference in greenhouse gas emissions between regionally produced
coal in Europe and Asia and use of U.S. -
exported LNG.

about the proposed
coal export facility.
The lawsuit
about the Montana
coal mine was filed in 2015, but expansion of western
coal mining and
exports has been a signature aspect of the Trump agenda.
As Governer Kitzhaber recently said in his speech on April 19th to the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, «The time has come to end all
coal exports in the Pacific Northwest» to stop «the very real consequences of climate change», as we are «the last generation that can do something
about it.»
Metallurgical
coal dominated U.S.
coal exports in 2011 (see chart below); metallurgical
coal exports totaled
about 70 million short tons compared to
about 38 million short tons for steam
coal.

U.S.
exports of
coal have declined each year since 2012 and were
about 60 million short tons in 2016, equal to
about 8 % of U.S.
coal production.
Between 2000 and 2010,
about 5 % of the
coal produced in the United States, on average, was
exported to other countries.
Besides strong demand for thermal
coal, which is burned in power plants, use of metallurgical
coal or coking
coal, used in blast furnaces, is also expected to more than double in China, to
about 1.7 billion metric tons by 2016, as the country's steel mills churn out more steel for automobiles, skyscrapers and
export goods, the Peabody study says.
• Support for energy innovation today comes from those concerned
about the high (and rising) economic costs, not to mention the foreign entanglements created by America's dependence on oil; the need for greater energy access in poor countries; diseases and deaths caused by air pollution, oil and gas drilling, and
coal mining and waste; and the potential for America to manufacture and
export new energy technologies at a profit.
Other Powder River Basin producers, including top US
coal miner Peabody Energy, have talked
about the potential for a new
export facility on the West Coast, with Oregon and Washington being mentioned as the top locations of choice.
The 2.2 billion cubic feet per day that Cheniere Energy plans to
export daily represents
about 432.1 million metric tons of hard
coal or 864 million metric tons of lignite that China does not have to burn every single day.
However, current data (through August 2012) show that steam
coal exports are rebounding, growing
about 50 % in 2011 and on track to grow another 50 % in 2012.
Fred is deeply concerned
about proposals to build the largest
coal export terminal in North America near Bellingham, Washington, and the herring spawning grounds of the Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve.
Clean Energy Asia and many others are even looking at solar PV as a potential
export for Mongolia, which already sees
about a third of its economy comprised of natural resource
exports such as
coal, copper, and gold.

about the possibility of
coal exports in the future and the uncertainty surrounding them, rather than specific information on actual or predicted
coal exports ---- even for proposed lease tracts that were adjacent to mines on federal leases that are currently

In making the arguments
about the

export impact you have to use a figure for the the increased
coal burning, not the total
coal burning.
There is somewhere north of 100 million tons of
coal planned for
export from Washington that we know
about.
As for how long the BNSF and UP have been
exporting coal through Westshore, it has been
about five years that there has been much over 1.5 mil tons, this year will be around 6.5 mil including what is going through Prince Rupert, last year was 4mil and the two years before that 3 - 4mil tons.
While the climate impact of the tar sands and Northwest
coal exports are both undeniably grim, it is the more visceral concerns
about groundwater pollution that have energized both liberal environmentalists and conservative representatives (eg Nebraska's governor) to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline.
