The two were encouraged to seek out artists making work about sports after a Google image search for «sports related fine art» brought up little in the way of contemporary art.

Freestyle was a turning point in a lot of people's minds about contemporary black art, and one that catalyzed a kind of new vocabulary for both identity and interpretation.

In fact, the work came about because these two different institutions, the Wattis [Institute for Contemporary Arts] in San Francisco and the Kunsthalle Basel, approached me to do a show they were collaboratively producing.

The website was devised and designed by a group of 16 - 25 year olds who wanted to develop an online resource that would give access and information about the contemporary art world and offer a platform for young artists to share and showcase their own work.
